Old wallpaper, flaking paint and uneven walls often need preparation before they can be repainted. Depending on the condition, the work can include wallpaper removal, scraping, repairs, skimming, priming and final painting. The required stages are listed in the written quote and can be communicated in English.
We work with expats, relocation agencies, landlords and tenants who need English-language communication. Typical jobs include pre-move-in renovations, end-of-tenancy repainting, newly purchased apartments and wall repairs in panel or inner-city flats. The quote describes the required work in clear terms.
What's Included in a Full Wall Renovation?
"Wall renovation" covers the whole journey from the wall's current state to a smooth, flawless, freshly painted surface. The job runs through 4+1 stages, each building on the last — for a genuinely flawless result, priming happens twice in the process, not once.
Removing old wallpaper, distemper, or flaking paint layers — by hand, machine and water, depending on the material.
Improves the bare wall's absorbency and binds dust — a mandatory step before skimming so the plaster actually bonds.
Levelling and smoothing the wall, then sanding it. The precondition for paint that actually looks good.
Seals the freshly skimmed surface before painting — prevents patchy drying and ensures even paint adhesion.
White dispersion, a custom mixed colour, or washable latex — chosen based on the room and how it's used.
Why prime twice? The first primer goes straight onto the wall (after wallpaper/wall scraping) and binds the bare, dusty, absorbent surface. The second primer is needed after skimming: a freshly skimmed surface is highly absorbent, and painting directly onto it causes patchy, uneven drying and higher paint consumption. Neither priming step is skippable — without them, neither the skimming nor the paint job will last.

Why Work With an English-Speaking Painting Team in Budapest?
Renovating a flat is stressful enough without a language barrier on top of it. Getting three vague, hand-written quotes you can't compare — or not knowing what was actually agreed until the work is half done — is a common complaint among expats renovating in Hungary. Here's how we handle it differently.
Surveys, written quotes, and day-to-day communication all happen in English, so you always know exactly what's being done and why.
No verbal-only agreements. You get a line-by-line quote per m² before work starts, so there's nothing to renegotiate afterwards.
Useful if you're being reimbursed by a relocation package, an employer, or need documentation for a landlord or letting agent.
We regularly coordinate directly with real estate agents, relocation companies and property managers on move-in and move-out schedules.

Removing old wallpaper and any flaking, blistering distemper or paint layers is the first step of preparation. We distinguish between wallpaper removal (paper or vinyl wallpaper taken off with water and scraping) and wall scraping (mechanical removal of crumbling whitewash or old paint). The goal in both cases is the same: a solid, stable surface that skimming and paint will actually bond to.
Pricing depends on layer count and material — a single, thin wallpaper layer costs less than decades of glued-down wallpaper layers stacked on top of each other.
After scraping, the bare wall is dusty and highly absorbent — applying plaster directly onto it is risky long-term. The deep primer penetrates the wall's surface, binds it, and creates a bonding base for the plaster. This is especially critical on panel-building concrete walls: without priming, the plaster can lose adhesion after drying, crack, or peel away entirely.
Skimming is the step most people are tempted to cut corners on — and the one that causes the most problems afterwards if it's skipped or under-done. Without skimming, paint highlights every unevenness, wave and crack, especially under side lighting.
On panel-building concrete walls, the right approach is 2 coats of plaster + sanding. This ensures an even, flawless surface even under raking light. Drying time is required between coats.
A finished, sanded skim coat is highly absorbent. Painting directly onto it without priming causes patchy absorption: some areas look matte, others slightly glossy, and paint consumption goes up. The pre-paint deep primer seals the plaster, evens out absorption, and ensures the paint covers uniformly.
Two coats of paint go onto the prepared, twice-primed surface. Both coats matter — the first coat covers, the second ensures even, complete, lasting coverage. The quality of the paint job depends entirely on every step that came before it. Paint type is chosen based on the room's use — see the next section for details.
Window or door reveal repair costs 3,900 HUF per linear metre for plastering and 2,900 HUF per linear metre for skimming. The survey establishes which separate operations are needed. Plastering a service chase is a different operation at 1,500 HUF per linear metre.
Which Paint Do We Recommend? — Paint Types & Where They're Used
One of the most common questions in interior painting Budapest jobs is which paint to choose. CityTint selects from the following types depending on the room's purpose, wall material and the client's preferences.
The most common choice: matte, breathable, fully covering interior wall paint. Works equally well in apartments, bedrooms, living rooms and offices. Two coats give solid, even coverage.
Computer colour-matching means almost any shade is possible. Popular for living rooms, kids' rooms and accent walls. Same base quality as the white version, just mixed to your exact colour.
For surfaces under heavy daily use: office corridors, stairwells, kids' room walls. Wipeable with a damp cloth and mild soapy water — everyday marks come off without needing to repaint.
Washable latex is particularly worth it for the "wainscot zone" — roughly the bottom 150 cm of a wall, from the floor up — in stairwells, along handrails, on office corridors and in kids' rooms. This is the section that takes the most contact wear; painting it with washable latex means you're not repainting the wall every year.
If you're renovating a rental or flat you plan to let out, white or a very light off-white is the safest, easiest-to-repaint choice for the next tenant. If it's your own home, a custom mixed colour is worth the small extra — the shade will be exactly what you had in mind, not the closest match from a swatch.
Prices
Skimming and painting rates in Budapest depend on the wall's current condition, number of coats needed, room size and how much preparation work is required. Below are CityTint's own, itemised labour rates — the same figures that appear on your written quote.
Interactive Interior Painting Price Calculator
Set the floor area, ceiling height and the stages you need (wallpaper removal, skimming, priming, paint type) — the calculator instantly shows an estimated labour cost. The result is indicative; an exact quote requires an on-site survey.
Try the Calculator →Why can't we give an exact price online before a survey? A full wall renovation's cost is genuinely case-by-case — the number of wallpaper layers, how deep the skim needs to be, the wall material (concrete / brick / plaster), the existing paint type, and the number of rooms all affect the final figure. The calculator gives you a ballpark; the written, itemised quote can only be issued after the walls have actually been measured and assessed. Quotes are available both from an in-person site survey and online, from photos — either way, in English.
| Stage | Labour rate | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation | ||
| Wallpaper / wall scraping | 1,000 HUF/m² (wallpaper) / 1,500 HUF/m² (wall scraping) | depends on number of layers |
| Deep-priming | 450 HUF/m² | before skimming AND before painting |
| Covering / masking (floor, furniture) | 600 HUF/m² | based on floor area |
| Skimming Budapest | ||
| Skimming — 1 coat | 1,100 HUF/m² | for partial repairs |
| Skimming — 2 coats + sanding | 2,150 HUF/m² | recommended for panel buildings |
| Skimming — 3 coats + sanding | 2,750 HUF/m² | premium finish |
| Painting Budapest | ||
| White dispersion — 2 coats | 1,400 HUF/m² | flat, office, bedroom |
| Custom / colour paint — 2 coats | 1,500 HUF/m² | custom mixed colour |
| Washable latex — 2 coats | 1,500 HUF/m² | corridor, stairwell, office, kids' room |
| Other work | ||
| Reveal-plastering (after window replacement) | 3,900 HUF/lm | |
| Window/door reveal repair with skimming | 2,900 HUF/lm | |
| Crack repair, mesh-tape reinforcement | 890 HUF/m² | |
These are indicative labour charges in HUF, excluding materials. An itemised written quote is based on the actual wall condition and measured quantities.
| Flat size — full package | Approx. labour cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 14 m² floor area | 313,600 HUF | 56 m² estimated surface |
| 30 m² floor area | 672,000 HUF | 120 m² estimated surface |
| 50 m² floor area | 1,120,000 HUF | 200 m² estimated surface |
Example at a 2.6 m ceiling height: paintable surface = floor area × 4. Wallpaper removal 1,000 + two primer applications 900 + two skim layers 1,700 + sanding 450 + two white coats 1,400 = 5,450 HUF/m² of paintable surface; covering adds 600 HUF/m² of floor area. Estimated labour is therefore 313,600 HUF for 14 m² floor area, 672,000 HUF for 30 m² and 1,120,000 HUF for 50 m². Every operation applies to the full estimated surface in this example; actual quantities can differ. Materials are extra.
When Is a Full Wall Renovation Necessary?
Not every painting job in Budapest needs all four stages. A full wall renovation makes sense when one or more of the following apply:
- Walls are covered in wallpaper — especially if there are multiple layers, or a damaged, uneven wall turns up underneath
- The wall is cracked, wavy or uneven — partial or full skimming is needed for a good-looking paint job
- The existing paint is flaking, patchy or peeling — the surface needs wall scraping, then priming and skimming
- After a window or door replacement — the installation leaves reveals and cracks that need re-plastering and skimming
- Renovating a stairwell, corridor or office — where walls see heavy daily contact, washable latex paint is worth requesting
- Before selling or letting a property, a repaired and evenly finished wall can improve the overall presentation. The required renovation should be based on the actual condition of the walls.
If you're not sure which stages you actually need, an on-site survey gives you a precise answer. Quotes can also be requested online, from photos, if an in-person visit isn't practical.
Full Wall Renovation in a Panel Building — What to Know
Panel apartments may require more preparation because of old wallpaper, previous repairs, multiple paint layers or uneven substrates. The required sequence — removal, repair, skimming, priming and painting — depends on the actual wall condition.
- Thin plaster on bare concrete — without skimming, every unevenness in the concrete shows through the paint, especially under side lighting
- Low ceiling height (2.5–2.7 m) — side lighting emphasises unevenness more than in taller rooms, so careful skimming and sanding matter even more
- Decades of old paint or whitewash layers — these need to be removed by wall scraping first, or the new skim coat won't bond properly
- Thermal-bridge cracking at corners — a common feature of panel buildings, which needs to be addressed with skimming technique and mesh-tape reinforcement before painting
- Smaller floor area, but heavier use — a typical 40–60 m² panel flat renovation usually takes 1.5–2 weeks, factoring in the mandatory drying time between coats of plaster and primer
The "Q" rating system is a European quality classification for plasterboard (drywall) surfaces — it doesn't apply to concrete or plastered walls. On panel-building concrete walls, the right approach is: 2 coats of skim + drying + final sanding. This produces an even, smooth surface that shows no defects under side lighting, even after painting. If the wall is more damaged, uneven, or has deep grooves, the number of coats can be increased.

FAQ — Wall Renovation Budapest
Do you speak English? Can I get a quote without speaking Hungarian?
Yes — surveys, quotes, contracts and day-to-day communication during the job are all available in English. Most of our expat and relocation-agency clients handle the entire process, from first contact to invoice, in English.
How much does a full wall renovation cost in Budapest?
Can I request a quote online, without an in-person visit?
Yes. Send photos of the room along with the floor area, ceiling height and the stages you think you need — this works well if the property is out of the way, or if you're getting quotes for several flats at once (common with relocation and letting agencies). We can follow up with an in-person survey afterwards if needed.
What's the difference between wallpaper removal and wall scraping?
Wallpaper removal takes off wallpaper and costs 1,000 HUF/m² in labour. Wall scraping removes loose, flaking coatings and costs 1,500 HUF/m². A survey establishes which operation is needed and on what area.
Why is priming needed twice?
The two priming steps serve different purposes. Before skimming: binds the bare, absorbent wall so the plaster bonds properly. Before painting: seals the finished skim coat so paint absorbs evenly and dries without patches. Both steps are essential — skipping either looks like a shortcut, but it noticeably shortens how long the paint job lasts.
Do I need skimming after wallpaper removal?
In a panel flat, almost always yes. Once wallpaper or whitewash comes off, the wall underneath is uneven and absorbent. Without skimming, paint highlights every irregularity, especially under side lighting. On panel-building concrete, the correct sequence is: prime → 2 coats of skim → sand → prime → paint.
How many days does a 50 m² panel flat renovation take?
Usually 1.5–2 weeks. There's mandatory drying time between skim coats (according to the product instructions and site conditions), and priming also needs to dry fully. The process can't be rushed — working over a coat that hasn't dried properly compromises how long the final paint job lasts. An exact timeline is given after the on-site survey.
When should I choose washable latex paint?
We recommend washable latex for surfaces under heavy use: office corridors, stairwells, kids' rooms, and the "wainscot zone" (roughly the bottom 150 cm of a wall). It wipes clean with a damp cloth — everyday marks and handprints come off without needing to repaint. Labour rate is 1,500 HUF/m² — the same as custom-colour paint.
Can I get a invoice, including for my company or relocation package?
Yes — every job comes with a proper Hungarian invoice (számla). This is important if you're being reimbursed through an employer relocation package, or need documentation for a landlord, letting agent or property manager.
